A bit of an anomaly i think, im British and have always celebrated Christmas on the 25th of December. My Wife is German and they celebrate on the 24th of December. Now if im celebrating his birth on the 25th and my wife on the 24th, who is correct? (i know there are other dates for his "real" birth) was he born on the 24th or 25th?

I also wish all who frequent this board a very Happy Christmas and a great New Year.

PORTA: As 12/25 was the greatest pagan holiday of the year in both Greece and Rome, that date was chosen for the celebration of the birthday of Jesus - so, as they were converted to Christianity, they wouldn't have to give up a celebration. The strategy worked extremely well!

It doesn't matter one twit, but the wise men brought their gifts in mid-March, 7 BC.

Merry & Happy Christmas to you both!

Well, this probably belongs in Religious Discussions, or on the History Channel, but some Admin can always spank me, and any one of several BBS members who dislike me can always toss insults and thumb their nose, so what the hell.

http://ancienthistory.about.com/gi/dynam...saturnalia.html

Excerpts follow.

By the beginning of December, writes Columella, the farmer should have finished his autumn planting. Now, at the time of the winter solstice (December 25 in the Julian calendar), Saturnus, the god of seed and sowing, was honored with a festival. The Saturnalia officially was celebrated on December 17 (a.d. XVI Kal. Ian.) and, in Cicero's time, lasted seven days, from December 17-23.

At the end of the first century AD, Statius still could proclaim: "For how many years shall this festival abide! Never shall age destroy so holy a day! While the hills of Latium remain and father Tiber, while thy Rome stands and the Capitol thou hast restored to the world, it shall continue." And the Saturnalia did continue to be celebrated as Brumalia (from bruma, winter solstice) down to the Christian era, when, by the middle of the fourth century AD, its rituals had become absorbed in the celebration of Christmas.

Actually, after some thought, this thread will be locked and moved to Religious Discussions, where it can remain active in the proper venue. Please accept my apology, Porta, but if I am to have rigorous standards for this forum, I must needs stay the rules myself.

To answer your question right to the point Porta... You're right. December 25th is the recognised day to celebrate the birth of Christ.

The other posts here are good explanations as to how Christmas came to be but fail to answer your basic question. (No offense guys).

That being said there is no "correct" way to observe the holiday. My family, for instance, travels to my in-laws for a huge feast and present exchange on Dec 24th. Which is Christmas Eve. And then on Christmas Day we open the presents here at home that we got for each other or were left by St. Nick. And our meal on Christmas Day consists of left-overs that the family shared out the evening before.

Before I was married I always celebrated with my Father, Mother, and Sibs on Christmas Day. But this different way works well too and is just as enjoyable.

My advice to you is to find a tradition you and your girlfriend can both enjoy and be happy to be a part of each others' holiday.

A good toe-in-the-water for starters. About ten years ago, I counted 9 previous "saviors", seven of whom were born of "virgins", all of whom were crucified, and several of whom survived the staged crucifixion.

Neither is correct. It is more than highly likely that both dates are completely wrong. Historical data is in dicative that Jesus was probably born in the month of September - the shepherds were still tending their flocks in the fields and this activity comes to a close around the begninning of October.

Additionally celebration of His birth is not a "Christian" holiday at all and was never even mentioned until sometime after 330 A.D. The birth of Jesus is not what Christians should focus on - the real celebration concerns His death and resurrection and is coming up between the dates of 19 and 26 April 2005 (10 - 17 Nisan 5765).

regards,

Well there is nothing "expectant" about these dates at all - they are historically correct dates and in fact have been observed as specific anniversary dates every year since their occurance.

The dates I speak fall within one week from 19 April (10 Nisan) though 26 April (17 Nisan). This week begins with the anniversary of two events which occur on the same date which is (Tuesday 10 Nisan/19 April) the date on which the Hebrews entered the Promised Land following the exodus from Egypt. It is also the anniversary of the date upon which Jesus Christ presented himself as the Meshiach Nagid or "The Messiah the King". On Friday occured the "Last Supper" or the First Holy Communion. The next day Jesus Christ was crucified which is also the anniversary of the Passover when the Hebrews were slaves in Egypt. This week concludes on 26 April/17 Nisan which is the anniversay of Jesus Christ' resurrection from the dead as well as the day when the Flood of Noah ended.

Of course most of Churchianty observes the Crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus about a month earlier in March (II Adar) accoring to the edict of the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. This is fine with me - although totally incorrect from the eschatological, historical and temporal perspectives.
