Terrorists won't win: London mayor news.com.au ^ | 7th July 2005
LONDON mayor Ken Livingstone said the terrorists who attacked the British capital today can never destroy the city's principles of freedom and harmony.
"Nothing you do, no matter how many of us you kill, will stop that flight to our cities where freedom is strong and where people can live in harmony with one another," Mayor Livingstone said in Singapore just 24 hours after London was named the host of the 2012 Olympics.

NYC steps up transit security Newsday.com ^ | July 7, 2005
New New York City was on heightened alert Thursday morning following a series of apparent terrorist attacks on London's public transit system.
Increased police coverage of subways, buses and transit stations was ordered throughout the city.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly was meeting with police officials and executed other security plans, a law enforcement source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press.
"We cannot live in fear. The greatest way to deter terrorism is to continue with our way of life," Gov. George Pataki said on WNYW-Fox 5 News. "Let the police deal with security and be alert.
Report any suspicions but continue to enjoy the greatest society the world ever created."
An executive order signed by Pataki allows Connecticut and New Jersey law enforcers to ride on New York mass transit, including Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North and PATH trains, said Pataki spokesman Dave Catalfano.

GROUP CLAIMS ATTACKS Sky News ^ | July 7, 2005 | Staff
A terror group linked to al Qaeda says it carried out a series of terror attacks on London that have left a number of people dead and hundreds injured.
A previously unknown group calling itself "Secret Organisation al Qaeda in Europe" said it carried out the attacks as revenge for British "military massacres" in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Two London hospitals have reported a total of 185 wounded after a series of blasts hit locations across the city on buses and Tube stations.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said there was evidence of explosives at at least two of the six sites.
Scotland Yard has denied reports they were warned of an attack by Israel minutes before the blasts.
Two people have been confirmed dead and at least 90 people injured in the explosion at Aldgate Station.
Prime Minister Tony Blair, issued a joint statement from all the leaders at the G8 summit.
"This is not an attack on one nation - it's an attack on all nations and civilised people everywhere," he said.
"It's important however that those engaged in terrorism realise that our determination to defend our values and way of life is greater than their determination to cause death and destruction to innocent people."
Witness, Angie, saw the bus explode in Russell Square. She said: "There were a whole lot of people around the bus. Next thing I was on the floor and there were a lot of people on me.
"I thought I was going to be crushed. The bus was ripped out at the back. It must have been a bomb."
The entire Tube network has been shut down and police have confirmed blasts at four sites: Russell Square and King's Cross Underground; Moorgate, Aldgate, and Liverpool Street Underground; Edgware Road Underground; and Tavistock Square where there has been a confirmed explosion on a bus.
One witness said the packed underground train he was on was 200 metres from King's Cross when there was a huge flash.
The train stopped and people were using umbrellas to smash windows of the trains. Passengers were led out of the train by underground staff.
He added people were milling around King's Cross covered in soot.

CTA (chicago) working with police on additional security after London explosions ABC chicago ^ | July 7,2005
A series of explosions in London prompted Chicago's public transit system to tighten security on buses and trains Thursday. Transit officials were working with police on additional security measures, Chicago Transit Authority spokeswoman Kimberly Myles said. Riders on the CTA system would hear announcements asking them to be aware of their surroundings and alert workers about suspicious packages, Myles said.
Judy Pardonnet, a spokeswoman for Metra, the suburban commuter rail system, said passengers would notice additional security officers on patrol. The rail system also asked passengers to alert crew is they see anything suspicious, she said.

Four London Blasts Kill 40, Injure 300 Yahoo News ^ | July 7,2005
LONDON - Three blasts rocked the London subway and one tore open a packed double-decker bus during the morning rush hour Thursday, sending bloodied victims fleeing in what a shaken Prime Minister Tony Blair called "barbaric" terrorist attacks. A U.S. law enforcement official said at least 40 people were killed and London hospitals reported more than 300 injured
The U.S. official spoke on condition of anonymity because British officials have yet to make public the death toll. U.S. authorities learned of the number from their British counterparts, according to the official.
Blair said the "terrorist attacks" were clearly designed to coincide with the opening of the G-8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland. They also came a day after London won the bid to host the 2012 Olympics.
