Anyone care to guess what the final tally will be when (and if) we ever pull out of Iraq?

Bush to Request $70 Billion More

What's interesting, though, is to take a little trip down memory lane and revisit what our friendly neocon-artists were saying before their little war... Past Comments About How Much Iraq Would Cost

And here's a question for anyone....

We have Al-Zarqawi in Fallujah. While the US is not in Fallujah I'd think that they are monitoring traffic leaving and entering that city pretty thoroughly. If not, why not.

We have Americans in Baghdad being taken hostage - and then showing up on video tape being beheaded by the above-mentioned Zarqawi. So is he coming and going as he pleases? Or are these hostages being shipped through the US checkpoints? Something just ain't adding up here.

Just a little, 'fuzzy math' is all.

S'ok though, just as gun laws will save us from those dastardly guns that miraculously kill all by themselves, just as the War On Drugs has done such a wonderful job of completely ridding our streets of the curse of drugs and its dealers, the War On Terror will save us all from the Big Bad Boogeymen created to scare us into submission.

:D I missed fuzzy math. Sure is making a comeback though. As in deaths and woundeds in Iraq. Anyone know how many of each? And that would be including the so-called contractors (aka mercenaries)?

Andy,

As far as the casualties go here's a site that's keeping up with it.

Iraq Coalition Casualty Count

And as far as the $ cost, there's this site.

Cost of War

At least somebody's paying attn. Yeah, Laz, how could this possibly be an anti-war thread? The "war" was based on lies from the gitgo. There ain't been much truth about it since then. But they're "protecting our liberty and our way of life." Uh, right along with Patriot Acts I, II and soon to be III.

Cary, thanks for the link but my point was that the numbers are being downplayed. Nowhere do I see numbers that include the many contractors who are really hired guns to provide security where the military is unable.

In the event of capture, what would their status be, as mercenaries? (Which, when you think about it, is exactly what they are).

Andy,

I've read that the going rate for a "shooter" is about $12k to $15k per month - tax free. A fair amount of recently retired military, 'specially SF, Seals, Delta Force types, sign on for the bucks. By definition, they're mercenaries, not that there's anything wrong with that. I don't think the mercenary stats are going to be put up anywhere. One of those "you got paid the bucks for the risk" kind of things. If captured, my guess is the US govt. takes a "nother one bites the dust" attitude. No bad PR witht the press, or the folks back home. Except for the public ambush, killing and burning of the 4 "contractors" followed by the hanging of their body parts from the bridge some months ago, I don't think the govt. wants the mercenary story to make the US media.

"Contractor" for "mercenary" is the PC equivalent of "Sanitation worker" for "garbage man". No, I don't think that mercenaries are garbage men. It's just a similar sanitization of a word that took on a negative connotation in the collective psyche at some point. (Not for you Andy. Just trying to anticipate the reaction of some of our pro-war members.)

what I want to know is what happened to the oil?

I know, silly question, thus my chosen name

But...didn't wolfowitz say
quote:
Iraq was floating on a sea of oil?
.

Gotta hand it to these neoconartists, when they screw the American people, they do it right! We get to not only pay to reconstruct Iraq, we get to pay higher gas prices, travel expenses, and a myriad of other things effected by the cost of oil.

I wonder, who would pay to reconstruct America?
