I glimpsed a show on ice cores in the high altitude mountains of the Tropic Zone. They've found nothing that goes back more than 25,000 years - a surprise as the last ice age ended 100,000 years ago. They mentioned regression of the poles every 23,000 years AND a seeming periodic, gradual change in Earth's orbit from circular to oval, an estimated one million year cycle - and we don't know where we are in it. They said that the combination of these two changes would have dramatic effects on both tropical and polar ice.
Rick is right - we have NO understanding of the NATURAL causes of planetary temperature changes. If humans stopped burning all fuels and stopped exhaling CO2, it might not make a dent in the changes - IF the current perceptions of increases are REAL, which I don't accept.

Not sure how many of you read the "Watts Up With That?" blog (http://wattsupwiththat.com), but it covers a range of science issues in a very practical manner. Lately, they've been covering AGW/"Climate Change" more than other topics (including some silly humorist type articles).
I've gleaned some very practical, clear-thinking type information from there ... lately, I was impressed by the videos of the presentation given my Burt Rutan last summer: LINK
Hope you find it useful, -Bryk

Other than Al Gore getting rich on espousing global warning, what does the "government" have to do with your comment?
If you paid attention, the U.S. did not buy into the Kyoto Protocols into reducing carbon footprints, and until Obama stuck foot into mouth, the U.S. has had no real intention of scaling back its production and use of fossil fuels.
Besides, I came across some interesting data (or hypothesis) that basically states that if mankind stopped burning fossil fuels completely today, it will take something in the neighborhood of 10,000 years before the Earth's atmosphere would be affected.
Another hypothesis states that the weather on the Earth is greatlyh affected by sunspots: the number of sunspots. THe greater the sunspots, the warmer the weather. Currently, the sun is "turned off," but is expected to exhibit a great deal of sunspots in 2012.
It is not the "government" that spouts and/or promotes a doomsday scenario: rather, we find that a group of scientists with their own agendas doing the broadcasting, backed up by a plethora of info-documentaries that spread the "worst scenario" as the scenario to come.
